New filters pave way for YouTube comeback

The Ministry of Information Technology (IT) on Monday claimed to have made a breakthrough regarding the revival of YouTube in Pakistan.

According to a media report, the IT Ministry claimed it has acquired the ‘missing filters’ essential for blocking the blasphemous content on the video-sharing website.

However, the government has yet not given a date for unblocking YouTube.

IT and Telecommunications State Minister Anusha Rehman had earlier said that the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) had provided filters to block 4000 websites having blasphemous content, adding that if the filters gave successful results then within one week of a meeting with the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), YouTube might be unblocked.

However, a ministry spokesperson said the test run of the filters was in progress and the IMC meeting would be convened once any positive results were achieved.

The IT Ministry blocked YouTube in Pakistan in September 2012 following the release of a blasphemous movie on the website.
