The Interior Ministry’s enquiry team probing the Sikander episode has held the Islamabad police and administration responsible for the five-hour-long standoff in the federal capital.
The four-member committee submitted an interim report to Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, recommending departmental action against Islamabad Inspector General Police (IGP) Sikandar Hayat, Islamabad chief commissioner other police officers concerned.
The report stated that the police and administration failed to handle Sikander properly.
The enquiry report also recommended departmental action against two deputy superintendents of the police (DSPs) who, despite being suspended, rushed to the scene and joined the police force. One of them, DSP Idrees Rathore even helped Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Zamurd Khan to approach the gunman.
The report recommended that the Islamabad police register an FIR against DSP Rathore.
The report further stated that the Aabpara station house officer (SHO) and 10 other police personnel did not try to disperse citizens from the scene and Islamabad SP Captain Ilyas also failed to keep the media personnel away from the crime scene.
The enquiry committee recommended the authorities to evolve a strategy and to train the police officers and the city’s administration for handling such cases in future.
