Gomal Zam Dam becomes operational

Another 17.4 megawatts (MW) of electricity was added to the national grid station with the completion of Gomal Zam Dam in South Waziristan Agency.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to inaugurate the dam in near future.
Work on the dam was started several years back with financial support of $40 million by the USAID. In 2004, the project was near to its closure when two Chinese engineers were abducted. One of them was recovered whereas the second one was killed during the military action against militants.
According to an official, besides generating 17.4 MWs, which would address needs of around 25,000 households, the dam would provide water for irrigation of 190,000 acres of land. Around 30,000 peasants and farmers could benefit.
