The Chinese delegation was headed by Gaungzhou Institute of Energy Conversion’s Professor Wu Chuangzhi while the British delegation was lead by UK’s Reality Renewables Ltd’s Neil Voughan Johns. The objective of the visit was to discuss, share and explore the possibilities of the mutual cooperation in the field of waste management with specific emphasis on the waste to energy options in the context of Lahore and Punjab.
The Chinese delegation shared their experience of waste management in China and explained how they started managing waste from open dumping to sanitary landfills and other thermal and biological treatment methods of waste. They also explained how waste in China was being managed by using different treatment options including incineration, composting and anaerobic digestion.
The LWMC team was led by LWMC Managing Director Waseem Ajmal Ch. A detailed presentation on waste management in Lahore was delivered by LWMC Operations General Manger Khalid Majeed. The integrated solid waste management framework of LWMC was discussed and it was explained that the LWMC had strengthened its waste collection and transportation system through international contracts and was now concentrating on scientific waste disposal methods. The waste to energy strategy of LWMC was shared with the delegation. The delegation was informed that 1,500 to 2,000 tons of waste would be available for the waste to energy project in Lahore for which the LWMC has also advertised via expressions of interest (EOI) in national and international newspapers. The Chinese expert explained that waste in China was incinerated for energy production while the remaining waste was composted or sent to landfills.
The delegation from UK also visited sites at Mehmud Booti and Lakhodair.
