Opposition stages walkout, demands withdrawal of FIR against private TV channel

Opposition parties in the Senate on Tuesday strongly protested over the registration of an FIR against chief executive office and bureau chief of a private TV channel and staged a token walkout from the House.

Leader of the Opposition Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said the opposition had reservations over the conduct of the media, but they stood by the media in its hour of trial.

He criticised the registration of FIR invoking anti-terror laws against the management and the reporter.

Aitzaz urged Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid to look into the matter and resolve the issue.

Tahir Mashhadi appreciated the role of the media and urged withdrawal of the FIR.

Abdul Rauf said his Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party would continue its support to the media.

Hasil Bizanjo said the FIR against the TV channel had not been registered by the provincial government.

“The Balochistan government can never think of imposing curbs on the media.”

The FIR was lodged after the TV channel broadcast footage of the arson of Ziarat Residency by Balochistan National Army.

The Balochistan High Court had subsequently ordered the registration of an FIR against the TV channel.
