Teachers stand up for their rights

Punjab’s professors and lecturers are threatening to boycott educational activities at colleges from September 9 if their demands are not accepted.
The Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association announced a sit in on September 10 from Nasir Bagh to the Civil Secretariat. They said that the teachers will protest in 526 colleges from 2nd to 9th September by wearing black armbands.
Under the association’s banner, dozens of contract lecturers will stage a protest rally on Islamia College to lodge a protest against the Finance Department’s notification that would cost a salary loss between Rs 10,000 and 15,000 to contractual lecturers.
They were demanding the withdrawal of a notification that will affect 18,000 lecturers. They also demanded the immediate issuance of a notification of the seats of 10 grade-21 professors.
The protest was lead by Central President Dr Zahid, Hanif Abbassi, Amna Manto and Lahore Division President Iftikhar Ur Din . They tried to reach Punjab Assembly but were stopped by the police.
Carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the notification and in favour of pay protection for contract teachers, they remained in front of assembly’s backdoor for half an hour before disbursing peacefully.
