Opposition parties unite against PTI in KP by-polls

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the ruling party in Khyber Paktunkhwa (KP), is facing a tough time at the hands of the opposition parties on five National Assembly (NA) and four provincial assembly seats in KP.

The PTI has vacated three NA seats in KP, including those won by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and KP Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has vacated two NA seats. Two provincial assembly seats were vacated by former chief ministers Amir Haider Khan Hoti and Akram Khan Durrani and two fell vacant due to the assassinations of Imran Mohmand and Farid Khan.

The PTI has fielded candidates on all five NA and three provincial assembly seats and is supporting the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidate on one provincial assembly seat.

JUI-F Chairman Fazlur Rahman is campaigning in the southern districts of KP. Imran Khan has addressed one rally in Peshawar and another in Lakki Marwat. Awami National Party (ANP) Chairman Asfandyar Wali Khan is also personally supervising the election campaign of his party’s candidates.

ANP senior leader Ghulam Ahmad Bilour is contesting PTI’s Gul Badshah on NA-1. ANP’s Daud Khattak is fielded against PTI’s Dr Imran Khattak on NA-5. On NA- 13 Swabi, vacated by the speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, JUI-F’s Ataul Haq Darwesh is contesting against PTI’s Saqibullah Khan from NA-13 Swabi. On NA-25 Tank, Fazlur Rahman’s son Asad Mahmood is facing PTI’s Dawar Kundi and the candidates contesting from NA-27 Lakki Marwat are JUI-F’s Ataul Haq and PTI’s Colonel (r) Amirullah Khan.

On almost all NA and provincial assembly seats, the opposition parties ANP, JUI-F, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are supporting each other against the PTI-led coalition parties.

The PTI candidate for NA-27 enjoys the support of Salim Saifullah Khan, who contested the May 11 polls on a PML-N ticket and Anwar Saifullah Khan, who is leading the PPP in KP.

For PK-27, an independent candidate,Jamshed Mohmand is contesting JI’s Fazal Rabbani and JUI-F Zakaullah Khan.

The PTI is supporting the JI candidate whereas the Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) is supporting an independent candidate, Jamshed Mohmand. The ANP, PPP and PML-N have also announced their support for Jamshed.

PTI FIELDS CONTROVERSIAL CANDIDATES:

The PTI has fielded some controversial candidates in by polls.

Gul Badshah is an Afghan national and it is reported that his family fraudulently secured Pakistan’s National Identity Cards. Some of the founding members of the PTI are reluctant to support him.

In Nowshehra, the KP CM has fielded his son-in law whereas the KP Assembly speaker is running the election campaign of his younger brother.
