Two policemen were killed and two others injured when militants opened fire on a Swabi checkpoint early on Monday. A passerby was also killed in the attack.

Sources said the policemen signaled a car to stop during the routine checking of vehicles at Kala Pull checkpoint on the main Jehangira Road. The vehicle did not stop and the passengers opened fire, killing two policemen and a passerby on the spot.

The two injured were taken to a nearby hospital and their condition is said to be out of danger.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the second attack in the past four days on the police forces in Swabi. Two policemen and a detainee were killed and three policemen injured in a similar attack on Friday night.

The law enforcement agencies have started a search operation in the area but no arrests have been made.
