Suspension of capital punishment saves 26 prisoners in Punjab

Execution of 26 prisoners in jails across Punjab has been delayed after the government suspended the implementation of capital punishment.

Per details, an execution that was going to be carried out on August 20 had been suspended in Mian Wali Jail after receiving fresh orders.

Sources said Punjab Inspector General (IG) Jails Farooq Nazeer directed the jail authorities to follow the new orders.

The total number of prisoners who have been awarded death sentence in Punjab is 6109, which 36 are women.

The sources said pleas of 4,632 prisoners against capital punishment are filed in the high court and 900 appeals are under process in the Supreme Court as well as other courts, while 454 pleas of mercy including one of a woman prisoner are pending with the president of Pakistan.
