Death sentence implementation temporarily stopped over president’s directions: Rashid

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid on Monday said the government had temporarily stopped implementation of death sentence on the request of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Talking to a private news channel, he said according to the constitution the president had the authority to take the final decision on death sentences awarded to prisoners. He said the president had written to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asking him to have a discussion on the death sentence law.

Rashid said the president was abroad therefore the final decision would be made after the president returned to the country.

The information minister said the government had launched a rescue and relief operation in the flood affected areas. He said local bodies elections would be held in the country soon because the prime minister believed in strengthening local leadership.

To a question, he said the Sikandar standoff incident in Islamabad was the man’s personal act, adding that the government was devising a new comprehensive policy for eliminating terrorism from the country.

  1. Do not blame President, You dont want to hang any terrorist, as they are your strategic assets !!! Nawaz Sharif is either playing dummy here or just trying to continue with the policy holding with the hare and hunting with the hounds.
