Bilqees Akhtar, the mother of gunman Sikandar who held Islamabad hostage in a standoff, has announced to disinherit him and dissociated from him, saying he has brought a bad name to the family, city and country.
Talking to reporters on Sunday, she said Sikandar should be punished according to law so that no one dares to take law in hand again. She said that she does not want to meet her son.
She appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan and the prime minister to punish Sikandar and provide security to rest of the family as they were innocent and her son could harm them after getting released from prison.
She said Sikandar’s behaviour with the family was not good and he used to quarrel with them often.
To a question, Bilqees said that none of Sikandar’s brothers used drugs.
She also appealed to TV channels not to show her picture again and again as they have already been defamed enough.
Meanwhile, Sikandar’s younger brother said his brother took up the extreme measure in disappointment.
Talking to a private TV channel, Nasir Hayat said the matter was already settled, however, Zamrud Khan, violating the security cordon, risked the lives of people.
Nasir said that Sikandar deserved penalty for whatever he did in Islamabad. He said all family members were taken aback watching him brandishing weapons, adding that he was frequently called up during the incident but he did not attend the phone.
Setting aside the reports that Sikandar suffered from any psychological disorder, he said Sikandar’s son Yousuf was not in Dubai jail, adding he went to Dubai for vacation.
Sikandar will unfold as to why all this happened; only after he regains consciousness, he added.
Separately, a joint investigation team has been formed to probe into the incident.
The Islamabad chief commissioner has issued a notification in this regard.
According to sources, the joint team will consist of officials from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the CID, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police.
The team will submit its report within 14 days.
Meanwhile, Sikandar’s wife was handed over to police on one-day transit remand.
Kanwal was presented before a local magistrate on Sunday who accepted police’s request for remand.
Islamabad police registered a case against the gunman at Kohsar police station under Section 6 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Kanwal was also named in the FIR.
Sikandar is under treatment in PIMS Hospital and is said to be improving, as he has started talking, but it has been decided by his doctors to keep him in ICU. While the hearing of the Supreme Court suo motu notice will be held today (Monday).
A PIMS spokesperson said Sikandar was stable and conscious, he was talking and his condition is out of danger.
He said that psychiatry test of Sikandar would again be conducted and no one was being allowed to meet him while his security has further been heightened.
Meanwhile, according to reports, an inquiry committee formed by the interior minister has recorded the statements of police and district administration officials. They clearly testified that they had orders from the interior minister to arrest Sikandar alive and they had prepared a strategy in this regard, adding that Zamrud Khan’s intervention foiled this strategy. The body will present its report to the interior minister today (Monday).
