Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday approved a draft for the local government (LG) system in Punjab.
A source told Pakistan Today that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has decided to hold the LG elections in Punjab on non-party basis, sources said.
The decision emanated in a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PML-N Central Secretariat, Model Town on Saturday.
The meeting besides others was attended by Information Minister Pervez Rasheed, Planning Minister Ehsan Iqbal and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. Though the local body polls will be held on non-party basis, however, all political parties will be allowed to put their candidates for the polls, sources added.
During the meeting, Nawaz approved a proposed draft for the LG system in Punjab. Sources said the government would table the proposed bill in the Punjab Assembly next week.
They said Nawaz applauded the special committee, which prepared the bill. He said that devolution of power to the LG level would strengthen democracy. He said health and education sectors would be priority of the government.
