Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the magical voice of sub-continent is being remembered today on his death anniversary.
The pride of Pakistan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was a singer of Qawwali, possessed an extraordinary range of vocal abilities. He is popularly known as “The King of Kings of Qawwals”.
Khan began by learning to play “Tabla” alongside his father. Khan sang mainly in Urdu and Punjabi and occasionally in Persian, Raj Bhasha and Hindi. His album “Intoxicated Spirit” was nominated for a Germany Award in 1997 for best traditional folk album.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwal artist. Khan was died of a sudden cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital on 16 August in the age of 48 years. He is considered to be the most important Qawwal in the history. In 1987, Khan received the President of Pakistan’s Award for “Pride of Performance” for his contribution to Pakistani music.
