Kashmiris observed India’s 66th Independence Day on Thursday as Black Day to convey a message to the international community that India has usurped the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

A complete shutdown was observed in occupied Kashmir on the call of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, and other pro-liberation leaders.

The Indian authorities put stringent restrictions in Srinagar and other towns to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations.

Amid complete shutdown, a large number of Indian troops and police personnel patrolled the deserted roads and streets.

Stringent security measures were taken around Bakhshi Stadium, the main venue of the August 15 celebrations. Close-circuit television cameras were used for surveillance and a large number of shooters were deployed in all sensitive areas whereas telecom services across the KashmirValley were also suspended.
