The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the government had imposed a ban on the issuance of new arms licences in a bid to improve the overall law and order in the country.
Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan informed the House during the question hour that over 70,000 arms licences had been issued by the previous government which had contributed to the worsening of law and order in the country. He said old arms licences would be reviewed and new computerised NADRA licences would be issued to replace the old ones.
The minister said the government was closely coordinating with the provincial governments to check sale of illegal weapons, adding that thousands of people involved in sale of illegal weapons had been arrested.
Minister of State for Privatisation Khurram Dastagir, on behalf of the finance minister, told the House that the government had retired the circular debt amounting to Rs 480.109 billion‚ which had helped increase electricity generation.
He said new power projects were being launched to cope with the electricity crisis. “Efforts are being made to bring Neelum-Jhelum and Nandipur projects into the system at the earliest.”
Dastagir said the government was determined to enhancing the growth rate by restoring the confidence of investors and other measures. He said reforms would be introduced in eth public sector, including in Pakistan International Airlines‚ Pakistan Steel and Pakistan Railways, to make them profitable.
To a supplementary question‚ he said the government planned to privatise some public sector entities. “Privatisation of 24 units, already been approved by the Council of Common Interests, will be given priority.”
