Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power Chairman Zahid Khan on Monday urged the Ministry of Water and Power to reduce load shedding across the country.

Chairing a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power, Khan said the schedule for electricity load shedding should be equal for both government and private sector, adding that some areas of the country were facing prolonged power outages while others were totally exempted from it.

Khan said only the General Headquarters (GHQ), defence institutions and hospitals should be exempted from load shedding.

“The government should inform the people about its strategy regarding line losses and power theft,” Khan said.

He said complaints regarding electricity should be examined and directed WAPDA authorities not to favour any political figure during the by-elections.

WAPDA Secretary Saifullah Chattha informed the committee that 23,770 FIRs had been registered against electricity theft but only three offenders had been sentenced.

Khan said the US and the World Bank had agreed to release funds for Diamer Bhasha Dam and Dassu Dam, adding that after completion of these projects, 3,000MW of electricity would be added to the national grid.

Senators Nisar Muhammad Khan, Khalida Parveen, and Akbar Magsi attended the meeting.

  1. Completion of these dams to secure 3,000 MW of power will take minimum of 5 years. In the mean time, load shedding gets continued as is, if not more. Result of years of neglect by Zardari with support from Nawaz Sharif and his beloved brother.
