One wheeling remained unchecked during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays as teenage motorcyclists were witnessed performing dangerous stunts on the busy roads of the city.
The one-wheelers were performing the dangerous activity on roads near the Committee Chowk, Nawaz Sharif Park, Shamsabad, Ayub Park, Saddar and other areas.
A resident Aftab said that besides disrupting the traffic-flow, these bikers endangered their own lives and those of others.
Contrary to police claims of taking steps to check the one-wheelers, the latter are still seen in large numbers on various city roads.
These thrill seeking riders take to the streets in large numbers on occasions such as the country’s Independence Day, March 23, Eid, New Year and even if the national cricket team wins an important match.
The bikers do not take any precautionary measures including wearing safety helmets and elbow guards thus putting their lives in significant danger.
And even though the traffic wardens were deployed on the city roads during the holidays, they were unable to contain the fun-loving teenagers from violating the law.
According to a youngster, Mohsin, the motorcyclists first monitored the positions and evaluated the response timing of police personnel before performing their stunts on the city’s roads.
Despite the presence of sufficient number of policemen on the roads, they were able to find enough space for one-wheeling and other stunts, he added.
When contacted, the traffic police high-ups agreed that one-wheeling was a serious challenge they faced. “It is a serious problem as several accidents related to one-wheeling have been reported to us. We are working to adopt counter measures. However, it is easier to escape on motorbikes than cars or other vehicles,” a Senior Traffic Police Officer said.
