Mickelson dreams of a final day showdown with Tiger

Phil Mickelson is dreaming of a final-day showdown with Tiger Woods at the 95th US PGA Championship this week.

Woods has 14 majors to his name – but his last was at the US Open five years ago – while Mickelson is coming into Oak Hill off the back of his fifth major victory at Muirfield last month.

“I’m as motivated as ever to compete and to play and get the best golf out of me, to hopefully play against Tiger when he’s playing his best,” said Mickelson, who won this title at Baltusrol in 2005.

“That would ultimately be the goal. If I can play as well as I can at the same time he’s doing the same, I would love that opportunity.”

For the year’s final tournament, world No 1 Woods and second-ranked Mickelson are heavy favourites and that is exactly how Mickleson likes it.

“I’ve always been a competitive person, whether it’s competing head-to-head with Tiger or anybody else,” he added.
