Former president Pervez Musharraf failed to appear in court on Tuesday where he was due to be indicted in connection with the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto.
Musharraf’s lawyer Ahmed Raza Kasuri said he did not come to court because intelligence services had warned him of credible threats against his life.
The former president could not be produced in an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi for security reasons, prompting the judge to put off his indictment.
Reporters’ entry had also been banned in the court.
Musharraf’s lawyer Ilyas Siddiqui told the court that it was not safe to bring the former military chief to the court due to security reasons. He requested Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman to grant exemption to his client from personal appearance in the court.
FIA prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar said since Musharraf was on pre-arrest bail, he was responsible for his appearance.
The court granted exemption to Musharraf for Tuesday’s appearance, adjourning his indictment until August 20.
Musharraf is not expected to be charged with murder, but over his alleged failure to provide adequate security for Benazir, Kasuri said last week.
