UN ready to aid Pakistan, Afghanistan after rains, floods
The United Nations (UN) is ready to assist Pakistan and Afghanistan if required said UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky.
The monsoon rains and floods have killed 120 people in the two countries, he said, adding that the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and its humanitarian partners were reviewing the situation.
“We are ready to provide food, basic household items, water, sanitation and emergency health support to the flood-hit people,” he said.
“According to OCHA reports, more than 80 people have been killed in the rains across Pakistan, hundreds displaced and crops on thousands of acres of land have been damaged,” the spokesperson said.
The Pakistani authorities have not yet requested international assistance, he said.
Meanwhile, flashfloods have affected villages in Kabul, Afghanistan killing 40 people by August 4.
Homes, schools and mosques have been destroyed, said Nesirky.
