The Senate’s Standing Committee on Water and Power on Tuesday asked government to explain the recent hike in the power tariff and prevented its implementation.
The body called the officials of the Water and Power Ministry and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on August 12.
The chairman of the committee, Senator Zahid Khan said the body had asked the government to stop implementation of increase in power price until the committee would go through the details of enhancing the cost of electricity. If it would be convinced then it would give approval for increase or else it would reject it, he added.
“We think that increase in the price of electricity is the public interest affair as it would put affect on the cost of all items,” Khan added.
