Lawyers boycott courts in Balochistan

The lawyer fraternity in Balochistan observed a province-wide boycott of courts on Monday to register their protest against the appointment of additional judges in the Balochistan High Court (BHC) and “the inappropriate attitude” of the members of the judiciary.
The lawyers stayed away from proceedings in the BHC and lower courts as a result of which hundreds of cases stood pending throughout the province.
In a meeting presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry last week, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan had proposed the names of Balochistan Advocate General Shakil Ahmad Baloch, Mohammad Ijaz and Mohammad Kamran for appointment as BHC judges.
However, the lawyers said the proposal for the elevation of these judges was not justified, adding that the judges’ attitude towards lawyers inside the courtrooms was inappropriate.
