In a bid to avoid incidents such as the jailbreaks in Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu in the future, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has handed over the external security of Peshawar and other central jails to the armed forces.

An official told Pakistan Today on Monday that military and paramilitary troops had been cordoning off the Peshawar Central Jail from all four sides since Sunday evening. He said so far the armed forces had been made responsible for the external security of the central jails of Peshawar, Haripur, Kohat, Bannu, and DI Khan.

According to the official, the purpose of armed forces deployment around the Peshawar Central Jail was to foil attacks such the recent one on DI Khan jail and the earlier one on Bannu jail.

“There are serious threats of similar attacks in the near future, therefore, the external security has been handed over to the armed forces,” he said.

The official said all internal arrangements of Peshawar and other central jails were still in the hands of the prison departments.

He said senior officers and experts of federal and provincial law enforcement and secret agencies had made detailed visits of the central jails a couple of days ago and had made some suggestions and proposals.

Meanwhile, besides the Peshawar Central Jail, the government has issued a security alert across Peshawar and its surrounding areas. A part of Khyber Road had also been closed for traffic.

Civil authorities had also declared high security alert in almost all commercial areas of Peshawar prior to Eidul Fitr. Peshawar Saddar, especially Jinnah Street, Shafi Market, Nauthya Bazar, University Road markets, Qissakhwani and Khyber Bazaar, and Meena Bazar had been declared sensitive.
