Sindh buckles up to rescue 3,000 rain affectees

With an aim to provide immediate relief to the rain affected people in the province, particularly Karachi and Thatta districts, the Sindh government has finally started making efforts to facilitate people by providing shelter, health facilities and cooked food. The provincial government will make attempts to rescue around 3, 000 rain affectees.
Moreover, the commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to survey the affected areas and evaluate the losses/damages caused by the monsoon rains and the flooding of a few water canals and distributaries, sources told Pakistan Today.
In this regard, a high level meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s House on Sunday, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Qaim Ali Shah.
The meeting was also attended by Sindh Minister for Revenue and Relief Makhdoom Jameeluz Zaman, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, Sindh Relief Commissioner Shahid Gulzar Sheikh, Additional Relief Commissioner Muhammad Sharif Shaikh, and all other commissioners and deputy commissioners.
The sources said that the CM had clearly instructed the district administration to provide immediate relief to those affected by the recent rains. “The immediate responsibility of the Sindh government is to look after and provide relief to the affected people on urgent basis,” sources quoted the provincial chief executive as saying.
The Karachi commissioner and Thatta deputy commissioner have been given powers to ensure provision of cooked food to the people displaced by the rains.
“At least 3,000 people have been displaced in Karachi and Hyderabad districts,” according to Additional Relief Commissioner Sheikh.
“A water channel meant to provide water to forests in Gadap on the outskirts of the city has developed a breach and the gushing water has entered into the city areas. Rescue staff has been working to plug the breach in the water channel in order to avoid further damage,” the Sheikh added.
Sindh Minister for Revenue and Relief Jameel told Pakistan Today that at least 4, 500 tents had been provided to district administration of Karachi and Thatta. Besides, 20 de-watering pumping machines, 50 water purification pumps had also been provided to Karachi and Thatta administration, he added.
The medical camps for the rain hit people have also been established in Karachi and Thatta, besides veterinary camps have also been set up for livestock, affected by the rains, Jameel said.
The minister said that revenue officers had been instructed to survey their respective jurisdictions so that exact figures of the damage caused by rains could be ascertained and future relief activities could be initiated.
