Rishta troubles galore! Javed Sheikh and Mehreen Raheel in spicy new serial

Halki Si Khalish’ recently and quite frankly it made me wonder how many more dramas will we get to see that are based on rishta troubles. This is the story of two sisters. The younger one, played by Mawra Hocaine is engaged to her cousin but interested in another much more affluent young man. The elder one, played by Mehreen Raheel has yet to find a suitor but a good proposal soon arrives that the
family is eager to accept. Her fiancé is now the same young man
that her younger sister is involved with.
Mawra dresses up, hoping that the family will chose her instead but she fails in all her endeavors. She resorts to throwing tantrums and then finally resorting to silence. Fate however has something else in store and the girl’s father is caught in a corruption scandal putting an end to Mehreen’s engagement.
Since the wedding was called off on the big day, it is proposed that she be wed to her sister’s fiancé and Mawra is more than relieved. However, the proposed groom is not ready and asks to change brides! Oh what a tangled web has been weaved! But doesn’t it sound similar to lots of tales already told on television? Are rishtas and love interests the only stories left for us? Do the audience still enjoy these stories? I wonder why we are shown the same things over and over again. Isn’t it obvious that sooner or later people will get tired of the repetitive abandoned wedding stories and vouch for something different? Isn’t this why people are moving towards foreign content instead of our own Pakistani drama?
The only thing that I like about ‘Halki Si Khalish’ was that we got to see Mehreen Raheel in a different avatar. She was not playing the usual mean girl with the latest clothes and a jealousy overdose. Instead, we got to see her play a character that was far more subtle than what she has been typecast into. I hope that she does justice to her character but then again, I doubt that she will be given enough margin to prove her talent as a girl who is not mean at all.
Javed Shaikh and his son Shahzad Shaikh also star in the drama so I guess there’s still hope. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that this drama turns into something worth watching.
