A sharp increase have been witnessed in car theft cases during the last six months in the federal capital, Pakistan Today has learnt.
According to police sources, as many as 266 cars theft cases were reported during the first six months of the ongoing year compared to 222 cases in the previous year, 2012.
As per police record obtained from various police stations, 23 cases were reported in January, 32 in February, 50 cases in March , 44 cases in April, 48 cases in May and the highest in June with 69 cases.
Out of a total of 266 car theft cases police only managed to submit challans of 56 cases. “Due to the apathy of the police officials 210 challan forms of car theft cases are still pending,” said a senior police officer who wished not to be named. Speaking on police performance about recovery of stolen vehicles he said that one can gauge the performance from the fact that challan forms have been lying pending from the last six months.
A number of senior and junior police officers (who do not wish to be named), while commenting on the issue of growing crime rate in the city said that after the removal of Inspector General Police (IGP) Bani Amin and Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Yaseen Farooq crime rate would decline further. The government has appointed Sikandar Hayat and Dr Muhammad Rizwan as the new IGP Islamabad and SSP respectively.
Sources said, Minister for Interior Nisar Ali Khan has given free hand to the IGP and SSP for controlling crime rate in the federal capital. However, SSP Muhamamd Rizwan sought appointments of 18 Station House Officers (SHO) and suspended 6 SHOs for their involvement in corrupt pratices.
Those suspended are SHO Kohsar, Ghulam Bakir, SHO Bharakau Sattar Shah, SHO Golra Mahar Munawar, SHO Tarnol Jamshad Khan, SHO Raman Asjad Mahmood and SHO Shahlimar Sajjad Bukhari. All of them have been transferred to police line headquarters.
