The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) Wednesday urged the government to ensure at least 33 percent reserved seats for women along with representation on farmers, workers and non-Muslim seats and allowing them to contest on general seats in local bodies.
The commission, in a meeting here, also recommended principles to be adopted by all the political parties in provincial assemblies for women’s meaningful representation.
The NCSW said that the local bodies’ elections should be held on party basis. Steps should be taken to hold the elections in FATA and women should be given adequate representation.
The councillors should be treated equally regardless of their election on reserved or general seats. The reserved seats should be on the basis of joint electorate. The women councillor should be paid travelling and daily allowance for participating in the meeting of local body assemblies or any other (official) meeting.
Sufficient funds for executing development projects should be allocated in UC and District council budgets for women councillor. The fiscal responsibilities and other powers of women councillor should be defined clearly, it added.
