The Supreme Court (SC) gave a 15 day deadline to the federal government for executing amendments in 1973’s Federal Services Tribunal (FST) Act otherwise these FST’s would stand ineffective.

On Monday a three-member bench of the SC chaired by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry held the hearing of the case.

Justice Jawad S Khawaja said that the court had given a time period to the government thrice but the amendment was never brought in and the government was not acting upon the orders of the court. The use ordinances were passed within an hour but the government was not paying attention towards such important issues, he added.

Additional Advocate General Shah Khalid told the SC that the water and power secretary had charge of the law ministry but he was currently in a meeting and thus could not be contacted.

The applicant Shoaib Shaheen told the court that the provinces had submitted their reports to the apex court by bringing amendments in the FST law. He said that the time for amending the law had finished.

Iftikhar asked Khalid how the members of the tribunals were working on the extension and he directed the government to put the proposed amendment on the agenda of federal cabinet at the earliest.
