SC seizes bank accounts of Eden Housing Scheme

The Supreme Court on Friday directed to seize the bank accounts of Eden Housing Society involved in the Employees Old Age Benefits Institute (EOBI) multi-billion scam.

The apex court also maintained its previous orders of seizing the Defence Housing Society’s (DHA) bank accounts.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sh Azmat Saeed resumed hearing of the EOBI land scam case on Friday.

The chief justice remarked that justice would be provided to the aggrieved involved in the case. The CJ said the EOBI utilised the money of poor pensioners without any reasonable grounds.

During the course of proceedings, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Azam Khan appeared before the court and presented inquiry report on the case.

Giving details of the investigation, he stated the DHA had yet not given the possession of plots to the EOBI as decided in the contract between the parties.

He said the DHA had also violated a number of conditions laid down in the contract which caused huge financial loss to the EOBI.

Azam Khan further said that former EOBI chairman Zafar Gondal received commission worth Rs 18.3 million while his front man got Rs 200 million.

Irfan Qadir, counsel for the DHA, also appeared before the court and stated that some sections of media were misleading people against the housing authority.

Later, the court in its order directed to seize the bank accounts of Eden Housing Scheme and maintained the stay order of seizing the DHA accounts.

The apex court also directed to hire the services of a surveyor to carry out survey of the EOBI land in Karachi and adjourned further hearing till July 31.
