Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) should not have boycotted the presidential elections.
“The PPP should have exhibited sportsmanship spirit by contesting the elections,” Nawaz said in a meeting with the representatives of the Balochistan Assembly.
The prime minister said the boycott was against democratic traditions, adding that democracy would be strengthened with the PTI’s decision to contest the elections.
Earlier, the PPP announced its decision of boycotting the presidential elections in protest to the election being brought forward without consultation.
During a news conference, PPP presidential candidate Raza Rabbani said the PPP was left with no other alternative but to boycott the election.
Rabbani added that the Supreme Court’s decision made it difficult for him and other opposition candidates to campaign in four provincial capitals and the federal capital in just two days.
“The Supreme Court did not issue us any notices, nor did they hear us or provide us an opportunity to present our point of view… a unilateral decision was made.”
