The Senate’s Standing Committee on Human Resource Development on Wednesday directed the Overseas Pakistanis secretary to look into the alleged corruption and mismanagement in the purchase of land and plots by the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI). The committee, which met with Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo in the chair, asked the EOBI authorities to take strict action against those involved in the corruption and inform it of the investigations. Secretary Munir Qureshi informed the committee that the EOBI was established in 1976 as an autonomous organ of the Labour Ministry under the EOBI Act 1976. He said the function of EOBI was the registration of establishments and industries, and their employees. The committee was also informed about the fixed income portfolio 2010-11 to May 2013. The secretary briefed the committee on the details regarding investment made by the EOBI. He assured the committee that every step would be taken against elements involved in the corruption. The meeting was attended by senators Col (r) Tahir Mashhadi, Nisar Muhammad, Naseema Ehsan and Saeed Ghani, besides officials of the EOBI and ministry.
