Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was not after him, but rather the Supreme Court was after the NAB.
Talking to local media, Gilani said the appointment of OGRA’s former chairman Tauqir Saadiq was made purely on merit. He, as prime minister, did not conduct the interview of Tauqir Saadiq. A cabinet committee interviewed him and short listed three candidates, Gilani explained, adding he chose Tauqir Saadiq out of three nominees.
Gilani said you could not put the blame of committing corruption to the authority who appointed the person involved in embezzlement. “Will you punish someone else if in future any judge or a general commits corruption,” he questioned.
“I took stand on presidential immunity and did not follow illegal directions. I can also defend myself,” he said, adding if he could take stand on immunity to the president then he could also take stand on his own immunity.
The former premier said if someone talked of allegations, then many people including the Chief Justice of Pakistan were facing the same.
To a question, he said the tenure of the chief justice could be increased only by the parliament. Those who accused him of Haj corruption had to bite the dust, Gilani wished.
