Battling with a severe power crisis, Pakistan is open to buying power from the Gujarat state government, reported Times Now. Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir told Times Now that technical teams from the country have visited two power plants in India, both of which are in Gujarat.
“Two plants have been visited, both in Gujarat, one of them is a solar plant,” Bashir said. However, Bashir said that the process of buying energy could only begin once a dialogue process between the two countries gets going. Earlier this month, Pakistan said it wants the resumption of the formal composite dialogue with India to address “mistrust” between the two countries. Referring to the start of back channel diplomacy with India, Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had appointed former diplomat Shahryar Khan to conduct negotiations.
Khan has visited India and expressed the Pakistani leadership’s “strong desire” for good neighbourly relations, he said.
Officials from the two countries are currently working out dates for the next round of talks between the two sides. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to meet his Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in September.
Blackouts lasting more than half a day in some areas have infuriated many Pakistanis, prompting the new prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, to declare tackling the crisis one of his top priorities.
The government sells power below the cost of production but pays subsidies late or not at all. Plants cannot afford fuel.
As a result, Pakistan has lost an estimated 5 billion rupees in the last five years, a loss it can ill-afford as it struggles to revive its moribund economy and reduce its budget deficit.

Who is doing whom a favor ???
India don't 'need to' sell power …
Pakistan has to decide whether it wants to buy …
.
Stop making circular talks …

Forget it. You won't get a reasonable deal from India. It will be very expensive. besides, they think they are doing us a favour, and want concessions in other spheres, such as Afghan transit facility.
ASAF ALI SHAH

You found the reason why cooperation between Pakistan and India is not a good idea …
and, you spoke about it …
.
india electricity is still cheap compared to pakistan
But will India sell electricity to Pakistan at this price?
.
As a business venture, most certainly 'yes' (maybe even at a lower cost) — but the price is going to be as delivered at the terminal (i.e., Wagah border where it enters Pakistan's grid) …
.
After that, what Pakistan adds for administration, transportation, pilferage etc. to come up to the final cost to the customers is going to be Pakistani Power Authority's business …
.
.
These kind of things don't really happen with loose talks or over-night …
.
As of now, the biggest constrain is that Pakistan does not have the infrastructure or grid to move this electricity to the end-user. It needs substantial amount of money and time to build this infrastructure. On Indian side, this is not a problem …
.
So, even at a bargain level, it is tough to see how Pakistan would pull it through (although Punjab business community is very interested) …
.
This is probably the reason that politicians are making all sorts of circular statements …
.
.
Further to my earlier comment, I invite your readers to see an article on the subject in the "Tribune", Chandigarh, India: http://www.tribuneindia.com/2013/20130722/main1.h…
.
Obviously, helping Pakistan is not a popular idea in India either …
and, people are speaking against it …
Correct approach is to gather info and facts. It is correct that investments, small or big do come in. These investments are not one sided. Power corridors and other requirements to compliment good neighbourly co-existance are need of the times. Not today or this year only.
Benefits occur over time, and good reciprocal approaches are needed.
Naturally, sovereignity of both countries must be agreed and foremost.
.
Sorry to say this, but …
.
'Misinformation' and 'Fiction' is way of life in Pakistan …
.
Government forgetting Kashmir ,water issue and terrorism involvement?.New government seems like making Pakistan India,s client state where as Pakistan is already USA,s client state now making India ,s client state. Not against dialogue and trade with India but first outstanding issues like Kashmir , water , terrorism involvement needed to solved urgent.
