Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said most of the time and energy of the government have been consumed in addressing the daunting issue of energy shortage and ensuring its smooth availability to domestic users‚ industries and other sectors.

Interacting with senior reporters at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad on Tuesday, Nawaz said the previous government’s poor policies for the much-important energy sector had ruined it. He said not only production of cheap electricity was a challenge but revamping the transmission and distribution system also needed due attention and large investments.

Talking about the challenges facing the government‚ the prime minister said most of the state-owned institutions including the PIA‚ Railways and Pakistan Steel Mills were eating up billions of rupees just for surviving.

Nawaz said he believed in transparency‚ good governance and fair play and would ensure them at all costs. He said electricity thieves of billions of rupees needed to be brought to justice.

He urged media personalities to give their input in the government’s energy policy so that the country was relieved of the menace. “Energy is a national issue and everybody must contribute to make the government’s energy policy a success.”
