- Sindh PG says that prosecutors play a key role in the judiciary and should help strengthen the rule of law
Sindh Prosecutor General Shahadat Awan on Saturday said the prosecutors should fulfill their professional duties in an independent, impartial and objective manner for providing relief to the litigants.
Speaking at an award ceremony at the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA) he said, “Rule of law is the fundamental element of a successful society. Our judicial system pledges to uphold the rule of law and the judiciary has proved that no one is above the law.”
The one-week refresher course ‘Role of Law Officers vis-a-vis Quick disposal of Criminal cases’ was attended by prosecutors from all over the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Terming the prosecutor a ‘pillar of the Criminal Justice System’ he said, “Prosecutors play a key role for the work undertaken by the judiciary. Their status and role has evolved considerably in the recent years and their responsibility is to promote and strengthen the rule of law, through combating impunity and ensuring the lawfulness of the state actions.”
He remarked that the modern protection services placed important emphasis on sound ‘case management practices’, ‘strategic planning performance-based standards’, effective use of modern technologies and sustained cooperation with the law enforcement agencies. “The overall objective of criminal policy is to reduce crime and increase the sense of security among the people,” he added.
Furthermore, he stressed that the prosecutors should ensure that the perpetrators of crimes are called to account for their actions in a legally correct and effective way. He also emphasised on building public trust and confidence as the integrity and impartiality of prosecutors are critical to public confidence in the criminal justice system.
The Prosecutor General gave away certificates to 21 prosecutors, two of them females from the Punjab Prosecution Department.
