Former member of the British House of Commons Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar surrendered his UK nationality and reached Lahore early on Saturday.

He will likely take up the post of the Punjab governor, filling the void left by Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mehmood.

Talking to reporters upon his arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Sawar said he had withdrawn his British citizenship to serve Pakistan.

In response to a question, he said “The prime minister is entitled to decide on the matter of the governance of Punjab…I would sincerely execute any responsibility assigned to me.”

Sarwar, 60, hails from Toba Tek Singh, and moved to the UK in the 60s where he was elected as the first Muslim member of parliament (MP) from Glasgow in 1997.
