The Gawalmandi police were in for a big surprise on Wednesday. It all seemed a routine matter of responding to a call on the police helpline about the presence of a ‘dead body’ near the Government Railway Road College. What the police didn’t anticipate was that they were in for a “wild corpse chase”.
A citizen, Muhammad Saeed informed the police on the emergency helpline that an unidentified corpse was lying near the boy’s college. A police posse led by DSP Mukhtar Shah and Inspector Tahir reached the scene to take the ‘corpse’ into custody.
As soon as a police constable touched the body, presumed dead, the man suddenly woke up from his slumber and took to his heels, leaving the police party shocked at the “miracle”.
Sources told Pakistan Today that some police constables and locals chased the ‘corpse’ but apparently he was too fast for the fasting police officials.
Refusing to acknowledge that the police had misjudged the ‘dead body’, DSP Mukhtar Shah said that they received a call about the ‘corpse’ five minutes before Iftari.
“We reached the scene where a large number of people were already present. One of my men had barely touched the body when the man sprang up and ran away. My men gave a chase but we could not get hold of him. He was a drug addict, a pretty slick one I must say,” said Shah.
He said they then informed the police helpline that it was a mistake and the dead body was in fact a drug addict who had fled the scene on seeing the police.
