The Supreme Court on Tuesday maintained the decision of disqualification of Amjad Warraich by the election tribunal.
The verdict was declared by a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sh Azmat Saeed.
During the proceedings, Warraich’s counsel Ahmed Awais argued that many of the parliamentarians who contested elections on fake degrees had been elected as members of the parliament.
He also cited the example of Jamshed Dasti who had fake degree but still he was allowed to contest the elections and reach the parliament.
Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked the court would not discuss any such issue which was not before it.
Deputy Attorney General Sajid Ilyas apprised the bench that Amjad Warraich told lie about his degree while contesting previous elections, and according to the constitution any person who told a lie was ineligible to contest the elections.
Justice Jawwad remarked that the federation and the provinces were not dispensing their duties in this regard.
He questioned whether it was the duty of the Supreme Court only and no one else was responsible for this. Later, the court maintained the decision of disqualification of Amjad Warraich by the election tribunal and dismissed the appeal.
