  • Government allocates Rs 14b for sewerage and water supply schemes

The Punjab government is planning to spend Rs 14.02 billion on the provision of effective and efficient sewerage and drainage in the province during the current fiscal year (2013-14), 57 percent of which will be utilised in rural areas.

Of the allocated amount, a major portion of the money will go toward the completion of ongoing schemes while the rest will be used for new projects, official sources said on Monday.

They added that water treatment plants for environment-friendly sewage disposal would be installed in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan.

Sources maintained that even in this modern age, safe drinking water is only a dream in most of the province and people are consuming unhygienic and contaminated water. To help solve this problem, the government has allocated Rs 2 billion for the provision of portable drinking water to people and modern water filtration plants will be installed across the province.

The project includes replacing rusted pipes, laying new water supply lines, outsourcing water metering in phases throughout the areas served by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), replacing outdated tube-wells and upgrading water purification facilities. Moreover, Rs 1.82 billion have been earmarked for water supply schemes in areas where water is highly polluted.
