No increase in private sector employees’ pension

Though the federal government has raised minimum pension for retired government employees from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 in view of the rising inflation, there has been no increase in the pension of retired employees of the private sector organisations.

The private sector organisation employees are still being paid Rs 3,600 as minimum pension.

The Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and deals with the pensions of the retired employees of the private sector organisations and corporations.

The government revised rates of pension in the previous year and minimum pension had been enhanced from Rs 3,000 per month to Rs 3,600 per month to insured persons and their survivors, while other pensions had been increased by 20 percent.

EOBI Director General Human Resource Javed Iqbal said, “We deal with those corporations whose employees are not entitled to receive pension from the national exchequer. Moreover, we also provide pension to those private sector organisations which have been registered with the EOBI.”

According to the official documents of EOBI, minimum wage was Rs1,300 per month in the year 2006 which has been raised to Rs 3,600 per month in the year 2012. Keeping in view the formula of the EOBI, maximum pension can go up to Rs 6,110 per month based on the length of service and average wages drawn during the last twelve months preceding retirement.

Old Age grant is paid in lump sum equal to one month’s average monthly wages of the insured person for every completed year of insurable employment, if an insured person does not meet the benchmark for pension.

Presently, pension is being disbursed through National Bank of Pakistan; Easy Paisa Outlets; and National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) e-Sahulat Outlets.

Iqbal also said that the technology is being extensively upgraded including core operations such as Employees’ registration, Employers’ registration, Contribution Collection and Pension award processing. He said, “Support services like finance, human resources and general administration are also being automated and all regional offices and stakeholders have direct access to the database at the head office,”

Furthermore, he said, “Processing of pension is expedited and the processing time is has been decreased from 30 days to 15 days.”

Through Phase-I of EOBI Facilitation System (Web Application) launched in July, 2011, interface with employers, employees and banks has been developed to facilitate them for submission of employees’ data and auto preparation of contribution vouchers and data and financial reconciliation. The monthly contribution payment has been linked with the details of IPs which will help in creation and updating of individual contribution accounts.

Phase-II of the system, launched on May 1, 2012 is to facilitate stakeholders in online registration of employers; online registration of employees; online generation of payment vouchers; tracking of prospective employers; online tracking of claims; prior intimation to prospective pensioners and online facility for updating insured persons’ record.

I am very sorry to say that the government retired pensioners are getting more than 10% rise every year whose pension amount is already very handsome but the EOBI pensioners always ignored for this facility and they are being paid nominal pension amount and are also not granted the pension in percentage. It is humbly requested to the Government of Pakistan to kindly look into the matter of enhancement of pension of EOBI pensioners.

  4. It is really disappointing that the governing agency of EOBI and management of EOBI has not yet taken any action to increase in Pension Benefits in the year 2013-14. Government in it part as controlling and ministering has also not taken any action as yet. Indeed now the Judicatory should take action.

    Federal employees after protest got increase in pension. But we are being ignored.

  6. This is the BloodSucking injustice to the Private Sector Employees who had/are already being paid on low amount. The factory owners are getting the Blood and Sweat of the its workers. This is unust and inhumane. Remeber injustice never last long!!

  8. Present eobi pension i.e. Rs. 3600/- is very little and in this amount a old man could not meet his monthly expenses. Therefore, it is requested that the eobi pension should be increased upto Rs.7000/- per month. I hope that Minister for Human Development and Fiance Minister should look into the matter personally and issue necessary order for increase in the eobi pension.

I am EOBI pensioner and iam getting Rs.3600/-pm from National Bank of Pakistan,Main Branch,Jhang.Although Govt has announced to increase EOBI pension from Rs.3600 toRs,5000/=pm whereas the other provinces has announced pension Rs,6000/-,i dont know that the employees of other provinces are getting new rates??, but we the employees of Punjab province are still waiting the enhanced rate, Bank administation says that notification has not been received as yet, I request to the Honourable Finance Minister, and Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to resolve the genuine distress of the aged pensioners very favourably plz plz. God will award u in this regard. thanks.

I am pensioner of EOBI and regret to inform that till now not notification is issued from the concerned department in respect of minimum EOBI pension as Rs.5000/- per month as announced by the Finance Minister of Ishaq Dar, this increases is a golden dream for the poor private EOBI pensioners.   25. It is a Shame that the Old Age Pensioners had no increase in their Pension in spite of the fact that inflation in cost of living has increased many folds.Government must take immediate action to bring the amount of R3600/- to Rs6,000/-

  27. It is shocking to find that the Govt, media and the so- called champions of poor peoples' rights are not at all concerned about the plight of eobi pensioners, mostly above 70 years. There is no mention of them in the media, in the talk shows and never taken an issue by the Govt. It is really a pity that senior citizens are grossly ignored. It is time that media highlights the problems of poor old people and help them in getting the much needed increase in pension. My appeal in particular is to the Dawn and News Reporters and TV Channels to convince Govt and EOBI their dedicated articles/programs to realize the gravity of the problems. Thanks
