With Eid on the horizon, tailors have stopped taking new orders for stitching of clothes due to advance bookings.
Due to unfavourable weather conditions most of the women have been unable to place their orders on time and are now seen convincing tailors to accept their orders.
Shoaib Akmal, a tailor at Aabpara Market said, “Around 40 to 50 customers visited his shop daily for their orders. Some regular customers give in their orders at the eleventh hour and press for delivery before Eid.” Orders from new customers are not accepted to avoid hassle, he added.
Another tailor, Ayub Khalid opined that Ramadan will be followed by wedding season soon after and since they were already occupied with Eid orders it was not possible to take in orders for the wedding season. He said, “Power outages have enormously affected the business. I have hired extra staff to deliver orders but people are inconsiderate towards our problems.”
Salma Noor, a lecturer at a Government College (GC) remarked that she completed her shopping well in time for Eid every year but was unable to manage due to domestic engagements. “No tailor is ready to take orders now citing time constraint issues,” she added.
Another customer said, “Tailors were taking in orders on extra charges to mint money and there is no mechanism in place to check this. They are charging according to their will.”
Yasmeen Nawaz, a nurse at a private hospital said, “The increasing rates of taxes have made it difficult to make new clothes.” She complained of stitching rates to be sky high burdening and depriving the poor to celebrate Eid.
