IG daughter-in-law murder case: SC seeks details of action against senior cops for delaying probe

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought written replies from the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to what type of action was being taken against the chiefs of police of KP and Islamabad for delaying registration of FIR and tampering with evidence in the Islamabad Inspector General Bani Amin’s daughter-in-law murder case.

A three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, was of the view that police officers and their subordinate staff had failed to handle the murder case and had tempered with the evidence, which was a heinous crime.

Earlier, the court had issued notices to the KP and Islamabad police for delaying the registration of the FIR in the case.

Waheeda Khan – the Islamabad IG’s daughter-in-law, was murdered in Peshawar on May 19 but the FIR in the case was registered in Islamabad whereas it should have been registered with the University Town Police Peshawar.

During the hearing, the KP additional advocate general told the court that when the victims’ mother requested for the registration of the FIR, the KP police keeping in view the circumstantial evidence, assumed that it was not a murder case. He said the postmortem report had stated suffocation as the cause of death.

He told the court that the FIR had now been registered with the University Town Police Station Peshawar and two accused, the victim’s brother and father, had also been arrested.

Upon this, the court disposed of the case but reserved the judgement.

However, it asked both the federal and the KP governments to inform it about action being taken against the KPK and Islamabad police for not handling the murder case in accordance with the law.

Earlier, to a court query, Islamabad IG Bani Amin told the court that he had requested the KP police to register an FIR but they did not pay any attention to his request. He said he had to get the FIR registered with the Shalimar Police Station in Islamabad as the victim’s mother had refused to bury the body until a case was registered.

Asked under which law had he registered the FIR in Islamabad? Amin could not satisfy the court.

During the hearing held last Thursday, Fareeda, sister of the deceased, had alleged that her brother was a drug smuggler and Ali Amin was his partner.
