An expensive date

As soon as the holy month of Ramadan arrives a considerable increase is witnessed in the demand for dates due to its religious preference.

The tradition of breaking fast with ‘Khajoor’ (dates) is connected to the religious practices in Ramadan as muslims across the globe prefer to eat dates in ‘Iftari’ prior to any thing else. A date seller in Aabpara Market said, “The dates are the most popular selling item compared to any other fruit in Ramadan with many stalls set up exclusively for the purpose.” Besides, it is also routinely used in various dishes and desserts during the month, he added.

As the demand increases the prices also increase according to the quality and supply of the item. Rashid Ali, a date-seller at Sunday Market said that Irani dry dates, Arabian dates, Pakistani Aseel, Karblain, Irani Rabai, Mazafati, Shareefa among others top the ‘most-wanted’ list. “Mostly people buy Iraqi Basra and Pakistani Aseel due to being delicious and affordable,” he added.

There are more than 150 varieties of dates produced in Pakistan. The most sought after varieties include dates of Balochistan, Aseel of Sindh and Dhakki of Dera Ismail Khan. Due to their exotic taste they are also famous the world over.

According to health experts, dates hold great nutritional value and are rich in natural fibres, vitamins, minerals, calcium, sulphur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium, essential for growth and development.

It is said that consumption of one date daily is necessary for a balanced and healthy diet. It helps in fighting against many diseases and is a natural energy booster.
