SC suspends membership of two MPs over fake degrees

The Supreme Court has suspended the membership of two MPAs, Shaukat Aziz Bhatti and Khawaja Islam, over fake degrees, while it reserved the decision over the degree of Samina Khawar Hayat.

The three-member bench of SC resumed hearing in the fake degrees case on Wednesday.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry presided over the bench.

During proceedings, the CJP said the constitution of the country was made in 1973. “Now the implementation on Articles 62 and 63 must be ensured. Why did the Election Commission not use its authority so far in this regard by disqualifying the members of parliament having fake degrees?”

Waheed Anjum, counsel of Shaukat Aziz Bhatti, told the court that his client had submitted his postgraduate diploma, not the degree of BA.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed asked the lawyer if Bhatti had submitted equivalent certificate with diploma.

The lawyer of Samina Khawar Hayat, Tariq Mehmood, said the trial of the degree in respect of his client was already in the court, so the SC should dispose off the case and wait for courts’ decision.

The representative of Higher Education Commission told the court that RiphahUniversity had declared the BBA degree of Samina fake.

The chief justice asked if Samina had shown in her nomination papers that she acquired the degree of BA in Home Economics.

To this, the court was told that the VC of Preston University had also announced her degree bogus.
