Police arrest panchayat chief for harshly punishing alleged murderer

Police arrested two people, including a panchayat chief and his brother, involved in meting out inhuman punishment to a man over murder charges besides recovering the victim here on Sunday.

It should be mentioned here that the callous incident occurred in Pul Bangla Gabol area of Rajanpur where the tribal court had announced a bizarre test for Noor Hasan, belonging to Birmani tribe, to prove his innocence against murder charges of a member of Chhang tribe namely Mukhtar.

Hasan was forced to sit in a 10-feet deep crater full of water and he had to sit there alive, until a man walked 60 steps, to prove his innocence. The alleged accused could not hold his breath after 52 steps were counted outside the crater.

The tribal court declared him guilty and announced that the victim would give two women from his family in marriage to the rival party or pay Rs1 million instead.

The court decree said Hasan would be murdered if he failed in implementing its orders.

The police arrested the court chief Mir Hazara and his brother and recovered Noor Hasan from Hajipur area. The police lodged a first information report against six people on behalf of Noor Hasan.
