A spokesman of the Senate Secretariat has clarified a news item published in a section of the press alleging that a Senate sub-committee would revisit the blasphemy law.

“It is clarified that the sub-committee, formed by the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights in its meeting held on July 4, has been tasked to summarise the report compiled by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan about the human Rights situation in Pakistan,” said a statement issued here on Friday.

“The sub-committee has nothing to do with revisiting the blasphemy law nor has it been mandated by the main committee. The impression given in the news item is totally wrong and contrary to the factual position,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the sub-committee, headed by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, would only consider the HRCP report to prepare a summary for a detailed discussion of the main committee within one month.
