Lyari under fire!

Law and order is yet under clouds in the metropolitan as six people including a woman were shot dead and several others injured in various incidents of violence here on Friday.

According to police, four persons wounded in firing incidents in Garden area of Hassan Askari Village, Defence Phase-7, Khayaban-e-Ittehad, and Lyari Agra Taj Colony who were rushed to hospital but one of them namely Shoaib succumbed to injuries on the way. A woman was also killed in an incident of violence in Bahar Colony.

In another incident of firing, two in Sohrab Goth including a man whose identity has not been ascertained yet were killed. The police recovered a disfigured body in the limits of Quaidabad police station. According to police, the victim was tortured to death.

Meanwhile, the residents of Lyari once again came out of their dwellings while protesting against firing and poor law and order in the area.

They held a stage-in on Maripur Road and blocked the road by setting tyres on fire. Women and children were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against different incidents of firing and lawlessness.

Police, Rangers and FC personnel riding armored vehicles reached Maripur in order to persuade protesters to end the protest.

SP Lyari Najam Tarin said those involved in creating unrest in Lyari would be dealt with in accordance with law. Tension prevailed on Maripur Road and adjacent localities after heavy presence of police and Rangers.

According to latest reports, police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesters. Angry mob pelted stones on the cops. So far, eight people have been wounded in fires shot by the police.

Meanwhile, Rangers conducted an operation in Manghopir Sultanabad area at 5:00AM and more than 1500 cops including female officers took part in the operation.

Rangers arrested 11 suspects including a suicide bomber and seized 33 tennis ball bombs, three smoke bombs, 46 different kinds of weapons, walkie-talkie radio set, a computer and threatening pamphlets.

One of the pamphlets warned women against visiting marketplaces. According to initial investigations, the suicide bomber had reached Karachi from North Waziristan the other day.

Security officers said the suspects belonged to a banned terrorist organisation.
