IHC hands PIMS acting charge to Mahmood Jamal

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday directed the Capital Administration Division (CAD) to hand over the acting charge of Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) administrator to Professor Mahmood Jamal.

Earlier in April, the court removed the controversial Professor Riaz Ahmed Warraich as PIMS ED. Following this, the CAD had given the acting charge to Dr Iqbal Memon.

However, CAD health Director General (DG) Dr Iftikhar Ahmed Khan on Friday filed a petition challenging Memon’s appointment, claiming he was inadequately qualified for the post.

Dr. Iftikhar’s counsel, barrister Umer Riaz maintained that Memon was not qualified for the position as he was also heading the Anaesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Department.

The petitioner’s counsel also maintained that his client was originally a PIMS employee and had been sent to CAD to act as Health DG, which was not even an existing post. He requested the court to accept his client’s petition and order his transfer to PIMS.

The court sought a reply from the CAD secretary in this regard, and adjourned the matter till after the summer vacations.

In October 2012, Professor Mahmood Jamal was removed by the former government, who appointed MayoHospital’s Prof Riaz Ahmed Warraich in his stead. However, Justice Siddiqui had already declared his appointment illegal as it had not been made competitively.
