  • While the authorities pat their backs for a good ‘printing campaign’ against dengue on The Mall, dengue mosquitoes breed unbridled in the less-developed areas of the city

Breeding grounds of dengue mosquitoes throughout the city have put the citizens at risk due to the apathy of City District Government Lahore (CDGL).

Accumulated sewerage water on different roads and streets could cause a severe dengue outbreak during the upcoming monsoon season leading to mocking of tall claims made by CDGL for dengue control. The Dengue Control Force has displayed hoardings on Mall Road only, conveniently ignoring the rest of the city and patting its back for fulfilling its responsibilities.

The sewerage condition of different areas, especially in the northern parts of the city including Jubilee Town, Shadbagh, Misri Shah, Badami Bagh, Ghorrey Shah, Shahdara, Mughalpura, Tajpura and Fatehgarh is appalling.

Dirty streets with standing water are seen throughout the localities. No anti-dengue spray or visits to tyre shops, graveyards and other possible breeding sites have been made by CDGL officials.

It should be mentioned that the majority of dengue cases reports had come from Ravi Town, Data Gunj Bakhsh Town, Samnabad and Gulberg Town last year.

When Pakistan Today contacted CDGL Epidemic Control Wing Head Dr Shabbir he said that the dengue issue was being tackled directly by city municipality and the Executive District Officer (EDO) Dr Farrukh Sultan.

The EDO highlighted the dengue control measures and arrangements by his team and said that he himself was supervising the campaign. However, he added that complete details of controls and measures taken by the authority could be provided by his office.
