Zoo to be modernised, vows Karachi commissioner

Karachi Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan toured the Karachi zoo and admired the newly acquired animals and directed the concerned staff to take all necessary measures for their wellbeing.

Senior Director Culture Sports and Recreation Shoaib Waqar and Director Metropolitan Zoo Faheem Khan also accompanied the commissioner. Waqar stated that the freshly acquired pair of pumas had been enchanting visitors for the past few weeks and were undoubtedly the stars of the show. The officers were informed by zoo officials that the institution’s fallow deer had bred successfully further increasing the number of animals at the zoo. The 25 newly hatched peacocks were also being taken good care of, the visitors were informed. The commissioner said a large number of development and renovations were being carried out to make the Karachi zoo something the city could be proud of. Elaborating further, Khan said that during the 2013-14 fiscal year, several beautification, renovation, and repair projects were in progress.

Khan further stated that plans to acquire more animals were on the drawing board. The commissioner assured the deployment of more staff to increase the efficiency of the zoo’s operation in addition to ensuring the availability of veterinarians for the animals wellbeing Admiring the zoo’s Bengali tiger, the officer said that such recreational facilities had the potential to increase the country’s quality of life by introducing another venue of entertainment for the citizens.
